Hi Kris, (1) There are a few packages in the UbuntuGIS PPA: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntugis/+archive/ubuntugis-unstable (including MapServer 5.4.0 for Jaunty)
(2) In fact, you can test any MapServer installation with any mapserver application (mapfile with data). A tutorial could surely be found on www.mapserver.org If you test the current UbuntuGIS packages, thanks to let me know your feedback or any bug.
