There is no crash: Ubiquity - and the entire X session in which it is running - "goes away". When I click forward in Step 4, the screen goes black and that session never returns.
The machine works fine: I can traverse all ttys with ctrl-alt-f[1-9] (I am typing this from my home session within #7- I boot, mount my home partition, update /etc/passwd, etc., and run my normal session from the LiveCD). But when I use ctrl-alt-f9 to get to the session where the ubuntu user and ubiquity were running, well, there's nothing there, just black. According to ps, ubiquity is running, I just cannot see it. Oh, that's interesting: As I write this, I am moving from tty to tty to attempt to further debug the problem. As mentioned, if I ctrl-alt-f9, I see black. I jiggle the mouse, hit shift, etc., nothing. But when I ctrl-alt-f7 to get back to this session I see the ubiquity window waiting for me in session 9, but of course I cannot use it at that point. So it is there, I just cannot get to it. Note that the fact that I am running another session with disks mounted is not part of the problem: The behavior I am seeing is consistent with what happened the first time I ran the liveCD and attempted to install, as originally described. I've attached syslog, and other logs that seem relevant. ** Attachment added: "syslog" http://librarian.launchpad.net/5659270/syslog -- Herd1 LiveCD boots, but installer hangs after step 4 https://launchpad.net/bugs/78298 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
