/var/log/gdm/:0.log looks interesting. While I've attached the whole
log, notice the following:

FATAL: Module mach64 not found.
[drm] failed to load kernel module "mach64"

and

Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
    xkb_keycodes             { include "xfree86+aliases(qwerty)" };
    xkb_types                { include "complete" };
    xkb_compatibility        { include "complete" };
    xkb_symbols              { include "pc(pc105)+us+level3(ralt_switch)" };
    xkb_geometry             { include "pc(pc105)" };
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Warning:          Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <RALT> has 2 symbols
>                   Ignoring extra symbols
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

These last messages occurred while moving from installer step 3 to 4 (I
had tail -f running against the log in a terminal). Then, as noted, when
moving from 4 to 5, the screen went dark (and I never see 5, except
under the strange circumstance described above).

Note that the attached log has messages for two complete runs (start the
system, run the install, restart X, run the install again).

BTW, FWIW my selections were English, Toronto, US English.
