Also it might be worth trying to download Wolvix Hunter http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix as you can boot up a cd of it without installing anything to your machine and it's usually quite good at picking up on networks. It could read data files stored on your Ubuntu machine. Puppy migh also be worth trying. Either one should help, assuming you can download reasonably fast.
