I studied the patch a bit more closely and am unconvinced that it by
itself is guaranteed to solve this issue.  Like mdz pointed out, in this
case mk is null, not master.

This patch should handle this case, although it leaves open the question
of why mk was NULL to begin with.  I'll forward this patch upstream to
see what comment we can get on it.
