Just an idea: I have been reading online about EDID detection problems,
and it appears that the nvidia driver allows users to specify an Option
line in xorg.conf that points to a binary file containing EDID data.
This would be a great feature to add to the radeon driver, particularly
if it is done in such a way that it only uses the provided file if EDID
detection fails.

Not really directly related to this issue, but it seems like it would be
helpful.
