Same problem here on an AMD64 (running 64 bit). Worked fine with Hardy, worked ok after upgrade to intrepid, and then sometime within the last 2 weeks it has just stopped working. I am assuming it was a recent update that broke it.
Symptoms: refuses to mount audio CD's, DVD drive refuses to respond to eject button too (not sure if this is related though as I haven't used it in a while).
