I of course, in a surge of confidence, installed 8.10 64-bit Sunday. Patience is just not my thing.
However, after updating, and then adding intrepid backports to the software source, and updating again, my 8.10 system has been up now for just over 16 hours - a record. I'm hopeful that at least for me, this fixes things. I'll post as soon as if locks ups again, or if it doesn't, in a couple of days. Cheers! -- (COMPIZ ???)
