"replace with package maintainer's version" is /not/ the default.  The
user must explicitly choose this option in order for the grub entries to
be clobbered.

I'm not completely happy with the usability of the current update-grub
code, but at least on that point we get it right in 8.04 and above.
Further improvements in this area (i.e., fixing it so that users never
*have* to resolve conflicts) requires fundamental changes to the grub
config file format (variable support), which will only happen with the
move to grub2 at some undetermined future point.

Alan, to keep your Vista boot option in the grub menu.lst without it
causing conflicts on upgrade, you should add it either before the line
'### BEGIN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST', or after the line '### END DEBIAN
AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST'.  The latter is where the Ubuntu installer
places it when detecting that another OS is installed.
