Same problem, same distro, same kernel upgrade, and same laptop (Inspiron 6400 with SigmatelAudio). I posted some deeper information in another bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/270005 (already marked as duplicate). Everything works as usual selecting the 2.6.24-19 image from grub, without any change. Loading of snd_hda_intel module seems not working in 2.6.24-21. I would be happy to send everything could be useful
