Tormod Volden: I was able to ssh into the computer, so the machine does not freeze. "top" showed that the Xorg process was consuming 100% cpu (in kernel) and I was unable to stop it by issuing "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" or by using kill -9.
Following your instructions I was able to get output from /proc/kmsg which I have attached.
