The installation itself worked fine, and I'm able to switch between the two copies of Ubuntu via grub. Software update also works fine on both installations. The OSes were installed one at a time. That is, I installed Ubuntu first on one-half of the hard drive. I then installed Ubuntu again on the second half. To keep things simple, the first installation of Ubuntu is called X, and the second installation is called Y. The update-initramfs utility does not work when I run it on X. It works fine on Y. This means that I cannot install a custom kernel on X. I can build a custom kernel and install it via "dpkg -i", but update-initramfs will not update the grub config files, and so my new kernel will not appear in the grub menu, even though the files are in /boot. All of this works fine, however, on Y. update-initramfs does not give any errors when run on X, it just appears to be updating the wrong files.
