Sudarshan Chakra to Sri Vishnu

Many shlokas in upanishads that prove vishnu had sudarshana chakra from the
beginning , the chakra is most used weapon of lord vishnu , and it plays a
great role in symbolism of lord vishnu , it is very important that vishnu
himself is called as chakradhari because he wields the sudarshana chakra .

The word Su-Darshana is made up of two Sanskrit words - ‘Su’ which means
divine or good and ‘Darshana’ which means vision.

Together, Su-darshana implies divine vision.

To know the power of Sudarshana Chakra, you should know how it came into
existence.

There is a story in puranas where Vishwakarma, who is cosmic architect of
the devas (demi-gods), got his daughter Sanjana married to Surya Deva or
Sun God.

However, Sanjana could not bear the intense heat and light of Surya Deva.
She was unable to look at him, neither able to approach him. When she told
this misery to her father, Vishwakarma decided to lessen Surya’s shine. He
cut off some parts of Surya Deva, collected the sun dust and created the
Sudarshana Chakra. Lord Shiva’s trishul is also made out of the same sun
dust.

Sun God is the param-atma. He is also referred as Surya Narayana and the
sudarshana chakra is made out this cosmic force so you can very well say
that Sudarshana chakra is itself that agni or fire, and ‘dharma’ or
righteousness.

Scriptures refer to Sudarshana Chakra as the divine weapon of Lord Vishnu
which destroys enemies and demoniac forces disturbing the balance of the
universe and protects law and order (restoring dharma) in the universe.

There are many episodes cited in puranas where Lord Vishnu releases his
sudarshana chakra and that episode leads to a significant impact on the
universe to restore dharma and also gives a divine message to us humans as
a takeaway.

Two episodes here from Srimad Bhagavatam.

Mohini avatar and destruction of swara-bhanu:

Mohini is the only female avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu. The name,
Mohini, comes from the word ‘moha,’ which means delusion out of enchantment
or perplexed state of mind out of intense attachment to something.

This episode happens when devas (or demi-gods) and asuras (demons) churn
the ocean of milk (or kshirasagar) and obtained amrit (or elixir of life or
nectar of immortality). The moment they see the pot of elixir, a fight
erupted between both the sides to take possession of the amrit.

Now, this amrit cannot be given to the demons as they will become immortal,
and it will be then difficult to destroy them. So, on a thoughtful
decision, Lord Vishnu using his yog-maya assumes the form of an enchanting
damsel and tricks the asuras into giving her the pot of amrit and she
starts distributing it amongst the Devas.

Then, one asura named ‘Swarabhanu’ got suspicious about this whole event
and quietly went and sat among the devas. When Mohini poured amrita into
the mouth of this asura, Surya (Sun God) and Chandra (Moon God) who were
sitting nearby recognized this intruder and alerted Mohini. Mohini then
came to her original form of Lord Vishnu and cut the neck of swarabhanu
asura with his Sudarshana Chakra.

The head of this demon flew far away in space and became Rahu. The body
fell down on the ground surface and became Ketu. And so, the lore continues
even today that to avenge this wrathful episode, Rahu eclipses sun and moon
periodically and this is why the cosmic event of a solar or lunar eclipse
happens each year that we see today.

Interpretation: Given swarabhanu was touched by the Sudarshana chakra, both
rahu and ketu are capable of giving liberation or moksha to humans. The
catch is - if we do not fall prey to intense desires and attachments in our
life and remain devoted to that param-atma, a human gathers immense
capability to attain the divine knowledge (gyaan) via rahu. And ketu is the
enabler of this liberation by making one detached in life.

Story of Ambarish and Durvasa maharishi:

King Ambarish was the emperor of the entire world; however, he was fully
detached to all the riches and pleasures of his life. He knew that all of
this wealth and material possession is all maya or illusion and was
constantly in devotion of Lord Vishnu.

Once King Ambarish was observing the ekadashi fast. On dwadashi, which is
the next day after ekadashi, when he was about to break his fast, the great
mystic yogi Durvasa appeared as his guest.

King Ambarish respectfully received the yogi who then went to bathe in the
river before breaking his fast. But soon, Durvasa muni was fully absorbed
in meditation while bathing. The auspicious time to break the fast was
nearing but there was no sign of Durvasa muni. King Ambarish waited for the
yogi but ended up drinking a little water to break his fast after
consulting the learned priests.

In the meantime, by mystic powers, Durvasa Muni understood what had
happened. When he returned to King Ambarish, he was very angry and created
a demon of death from his hair. King Ambarish did not say a word and just
prayed to Lord Vishnu humbly.

The moment the yogi was about to curse King Ambarish, Lord Vishnu sent his
Sudarshana Chakra which immediately killed the fiery demon and then pursued
Durvasa muni to harm him for this act.

Durvasa muni got scared, he was burning with the blazing heat of the
sudarshana chakra and fled to Brahmaloka, Sivaloka and all the other higher
spiritual planes but he could not protect himself from the wrath of the
Sudarshana Chakra.

Finally, he surrendered to Lord Narayana but even Lord Narayana could not
excuse a person who had offended his devotee. And thus, Lord Narayana
suggested Durvasa to go back to King Ambarish and beg his pardon.

And so, Durvasa Muni begged the King for forgiveness and King Ambarish
forgave the yogi and prayed Sudarshana chakra to calm down.

Interpretation: Lord Narayan is bind to all his devotees who detach
themselves from all their material possessions and desires and surrender
unto him. His sudarshana chakra is always ready to destroy the evils
surrounding his devotees. He makes sure that they are well taken care of
this material planet while alive and do not return to the material world.

Sudarshana Chakra is the dharma or righteousness on its own and it gets
invoked everytime when there is an imbalance in the universe with rise of
evil and demoniac forces. That’s the insurmountable power of this mighty
weapon of Lord Vishnu.
