Sharnga (Sanskrit: शार्ङ्ग, romanized: Śārṅga) also spelled as Saranga or
Sharanga, is the celestial bow of the Hindu god Vishnu, primarily
associated with his avatar of Rama. In South India, the Sharanga is also
simply known as the Kodanda, literally meaning bow. Rama is often praised
as Kodandapani, the holder of the Kodanda. The attribute of the bow is also
mentioned in the Vishnu Sahasranama. The Sharanga is notable for its
employment by a number of the Dashavatara, the avatars of Vishnu:
Parashurama, Rama, and Krishna. Rama carries the bow in his epic and is
also mentioned to bear it in the Padma Purana. The bow is offered to him by
Parashurama, the previous incarnation of Vishnu. In the Ramayana,
Parashurama, the Brahmin warrior who is famously the scourge of Kshatriyas,
regales the tale of the bow. Vishvakarma creates the bows of Pinaka and
Sharanga to settle the question of the superiority of the deities Vishnu
and Shiva. Vishnu is victorious, and Shiva presents his bow to the king of
Mithila. Vishnu's bow is passed down to Richika, who presents it to
Jamadagni, Parashurama's father, the latter claiming it after his father's
assassination. Parashurama challenges Rama to fight him if the latter is
able to string the bow. When the prince achieves this, the warrior admits
defeat and retires to his abode.
This is the sculpture of Kodanda Rama who is seated in Sukhasana with left
leg folded and the right leg left down. His Siras, Parsva, Urah [uras] and
Kati are in Sama or unbent or raised. His right hand is holding a Bana and
his left hand is holding the bow Kodanda. The main sculpture on this pillar
is a horse rider. He is controlling the horse with his left hand and is
carrying a sword with his right. To his left we can see the sculpture of
Rajagopala with his wife Satyabhama on his left. Rajagopala is holding a
stick with a whip attached. Satyabhama is holding a Padma in her right and
has kept her left hand on Uru. Kumbakonam is considered as one of the
holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas
(monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs
depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya
Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
Maheśvara said: [PADMA PURANA CHAP 244 RAMA DROWNING IN SARAYU]
82-91. When he was full of the sun’s rays, and when showers of flowers were
dropped on him, he abandoned the human form and entered his own body. Both
the noble Śatrughna and Bharata, endowed with divine lustre, were with him
with the conch and the disc, his portions. He, the four-armed one, who had
a conch, a disc, a mace, and the *Śārṅga (bow*) in his hands, who was
possessed of divine ornaments, who had (his body) smeared with divine
sandal, who had worn divine yellow garments, whose eyes were like
lotus-leaves, who was a youth, whose-body was handsome, who was bright with
delicate parts, whose hair was very glossy, dark and curly, who had
auspicious marks, who was dark like fresh dūrvā-sprouts, whose face
resembled the full moon, got along with the two goddesses into an
aeroplane, and he, the lord, of a great lustre, praised by all gods, sat on
the divine throne at the root of the desire-yielding tree. Those bears,
monkeys and men, just on touching the water of Sarayū, happily cast their
life. Due to Rama’s grace all they were handsome and had divine forms. They
had worn divine flowers and garments; they had divine, auspicious lustre.
There were innumerable men. Śrī Rāma, having lotus-like eyes, surrounded by
all, worshipped by hosts of gods and siddhas, praised by all gods, got into
the aeroplane.
92-95. The lord came to his own eternal, divine, imperishable place. O you
of a beautiful appearance, one who would recite the (full) account of Rāma,
or would listen to a verse or half a verse or would devoutly remember it,
would, being free from sins committed knowingly or unknowingly during
crores of existences, reach, along with his sons and wife, without any
effort, Viṣṇu’s world, to be reached (only) through abstract meditation. O
goddess, I have narrated to you this great account of Rāma. Due to the
narration (of the account) of Rāma, I am blessed along with you, O goddess.
O you of an excellent face, what else do you desire to know? I shall
narrate all that.
Kodaṇḍa (कोदण्ड).—A bow; रे कन्दर्प करं कदर्थयसि किं कोदण्डटङ्कारवैः (re
kandarpa karaṃ kadarthayasi kiṃ kodaṇḍaṭaṅkāravaiḥ) Bhartṛhari 3.1;
कोदण्डपाणिनिनदत्प्रतिरोधकानाम् (kodaṇḍapāṇininadatpratirodhakānām) M.5.1.
1 An eye-brow. kodaṇḍaḥ (कोदण्डः), kodaṇḍam (कोदण्डम्).
"Kodanda" means a "Bow" - as in Bow and arrow. It is said, that if Rahu is
placed in Dhanu {which also means "Bow"} a Kodanda Rahu Yoga is formed. To
date, I have not yet come across a text which ascribes to the formation of
this yoga. There is a very good reason why I suspect that this yoga might
be infructuous when it comes to giving any results. We all know that the
maximum effect of a planet, Good or bad, is felt during his Dasha and
Antardasha. B.P.H.S. chapter 27 states,B.P.H.S. chapter 27 sloka 34-39 1/2
- In order to clarify the effects of the Dasha of Rahu, I shall first
mention the exaltation and debilitation of Rahu and Ketu. The exaltation
rashi of Rahu is Vrishabha. The exaltation rashi of Ketu is Vrischika. The
Moola-Trikonas of Rahu and Ketu are Mithuna and Dhanu respectively. The own
rashis of Rahu and Ketu are Kumbha and Vrischika in that order. Some sages
have expressed the view that Kanye is the own rashi of Rahu and Meena is
the own rashi of Ketu. As per popular opinion ""Konanda Rahu"" comes into
play only when Rahu is in Dhanu. Now As per Sage Parashara, Dhanu is Ketu's
Moola Trikona. How then can Rahu in Dhanu give good results to the native ?
Even if such a concept of ""Kodanda Rahu"" existed, I think it will not
yield any results in your horoscope since Guru is debilitated in your chart.
