Tali Shiva Temple is considered to be the oldest temple inKozhikode district and is built by the Zamorin King of Kozhikode, SwamyThirumulpad within his palace complex. According to legends, the Tali templeoriginally belongs to 50 Namboothiri families and it has a history that datesback to the 14th century. This temple features great woodworks combined with lateriteto form amazing wall paintings and wooden roof carvings and is an outstandingexample of the Kerala style of architecture. Legends also say that Saint Parasurama who is the incarnationof Lord Vishnu used to worship Lord Shiva at this temple. The temple host theannual seven days long cultural and intellectual event known as Revathi Pattathanam everyyear in the months of October to November, during which the selected scholarsare conferred with the title Bhatta along with a panakizhi (sachet of money). There is specialty with Ganapathi homam performed in thistemple. The priest stand and perform homam. It is believed the Maha Ganapathi raises his headto hand level of the priest to receivethe homam. The temple was built in the 14thcentury by Zamorin of Calicut. The Tali Shiva Temple remains not only a placeof worship but also a symbol of Kozhikode's rich cultural and spiritualheritage. Legend The Tali Temple is believed to have been constructed at theend of Dwaparayuga and is the oldest temple in Kozhikode. It is believed thatthe Tali Temple is constructed by Saint Parasurama, an incarnation of LordVishnu. History Tali Temple was originally a small temple that belonged to 50Namboothiri families in the village of Tali and it gained importance 1500 yearsago. Later the Zamorins of Kozhikode executed the Namboothiri families and tookover the temple. They were also known as Sailabdheswara, meaning the lord ofthe mountain and the sea. Swamy Thirumulpad, a Zamorin of Kozhikode made the templewithin his palace complex. Later, another Zamorin named, Manavikraman renovated thetemple and gave it its present structure. But in the 18th century, during Tipu Sultan’s conquest ofMalabar, this temple was almost damaged and again was renovated in 1964. The people of Kozhikode still believes that the temple hasbrought richness to Kozhikode. Speciality : The Tali Temple is a historically significant temple withnumerous deities. The sanctum of the temple is two-storeyed and is in the formof a chariot which is decorated with mural paintings. The large walls of the temple are built in the form of anelephant belly. The temple complex is adorned with fine granite sculpturesthat portray different stories from the Puranas. Sculptures of birds andanimals are also found here. Architecture The temple is built in traditional Kerala architecturalstyle. The two-storied sanctum-sanctorum is in the shape of a chariot. It isadorned with murals and granite sculptures of Shiva’s retinue. About deities in thetemple The sanctumof the temple contains a Jyotirlinga. The inner prakaram ofthe Tali Temple in Kozhikode has Umamaheswara, Tali Ganapathy, Thevarathil Ganapathy andTirumanthamkunnu Bhagavathy. While the outer prakaram of the temple havedeities of Lord Ayyappa,Thevarathil Bhagavathy and Lord Naga. There is aseparate temple for Lord Vishnu within the Tali Temple complex and it also hasits own Dwajastambam. The Vishnu Temple in Tali Temple complex has the idol of SreeValayanad Bhagavati. At the southern part of the Vishnu Temple, there is anothersmall temple dedicated to NarasimhaMoorthy. And the northern part of the temple has the Eranjipuram. Here is a breakdown of the daily poojas: 1. Namaskaram: This is the early morning poojaservice, which occurs when the temple first opens in the morning, around 4:30a.m. 2. Uchakkalam: This mid-day pooja typicallytakes place around noon. 3. Deeparadhana: This is the evening pooja,which concludes as the temple closes for the day, usually around 8:30 p.m. Festivals : Revathi Pattathanam is the most prominent festivalcelebrated in Tali Temple. It is an annual seven days long congregation ofscholars which is held under the supervision of Zamorins. This cultural event starts on the Revathy asterism in the Malayalam month ofThulam which falls between the months of October and November and hence thename This festival isbelieved to have been started by the Zamorin as a penance for killing theNamboothiris in Tali. The selected scholars are conferred with thetitle Bhatta along with a panakizhi (sachet of money). The Tali Temple in Kozhikode celebrates an annual eight-day festival in theMalayalam month of Medam (April) that starts with flag hoisting inthe Shiva and Krishna temples and ends with an Arattu in the chira close to thetemple. This chira and premises have been renovated recently. The temple also celebrates the Prathishta festival in the Malayalam monthof Mithunam that falls between the months of June and July.
