Today my posting is about the Puthiyakavu Devi temple atAyoor in the 
Pathanamthitta District of Kerala. The first night's resting placefor the 
Thiruvabharanam procession starting from my native Pandalam, Sasthatemple  is 
the Ayroor Puthiyakavu Devitemple, after which the procession continues to Laha 
Forest IB on the secondnight.

Introduction

The Ayroor Puthiyakavu Devi Temple is a Hindu temple nearAyroor, a village in 
Pathanamthitta District. The temple is on the left bank ofthe Pampa River. The 
sacred jewels of Ayyappan (Thiruvabharanam) are taken inprocession to 
Sabarimalai each year from Pandalam, and Ayroor Temple is thefirst night halt  
on the way during theMakara vilakku season (late December). Ayroor Puthiyakavu 
Devi temple islocated at Ayroor village, around 11 km east of Aranmula in 
PathanamthittaDistrict, Kerala. 

Deities

The main deity worshipped in the shrine is GoddessBhadrakali. The pratishta 
here is peedam. Bhagavathi is a form of GoddessDurga, revered as the divine 
feminine energy embodying strength, protection,and auspiciousness.

Upadevatha / Sub Deities- The upadevathas are Ganapathy,Mayayakshi and 
Rakshasas.

Devotees experience a deep sense of spirituality and devotionwhen visiting 
Puthiyakavu Bhagavathi Temple, participating in rituals thatstrengthen their 
faith and connection with the divine.

Temple and PoojaTimings

Temple timings are : 5-11 am, 5.30 – 8 pm. Poojas as in otherDevi temples. 

Important Festivals

1) 10 days concluding on the day of "Bharani" inthe month of "Makaram". The 
Makarabharani Thiruvutsavam, a 10-dayannual festival, is celebrated in 
January-February (Makaram month) at AyiroorPuthiyakavu Devi Temple. It honours 
Goddess Bhadrakali with vibrant rituals,cultural events, and processions. The 
Makara Bharani festival celebrated forten days is associated with the 
Mahabhagavatha Yajna. Bhagavatha chanting isdone ritualistically with worship 
incarnations of Lord Vishnu. This is alsoknown as Dasavatharapooja. 
Palliyunarthal, Utsavabali, Deeparadhana andreligious speeches are organized on 
all days.

Sarvaiswarya Pooja, Kazhcha Sreeballi, Seva are the otherprograms. Avabhrutha 
Snanakhoshaytra is an important ritual on the 7th day. The9th day witnesses the 
Pallivetta. The festival ends with Arattu on the tenthday. The utsava murti of 
the deity is taken out of the shrine for ritualbathing on the final day. 
Caparisoned elephants and melam are part of theritual.

2) Kettukazhcha on the day of "Revathy" in themonth of "Kumbham". The 
Kettukazhcha is observed on Revathi nakshatraday in Kumbham month.The 
Kettukazhcha and festival is organized by the 14 karasof Ayroor and 
Cherukolpuzha village.

Specialty

The Thiruvabharanam procession that goes Sabarimala AyyappaTemple annually from 
Pandalam palace halts for a day at the temple while goingand returning.

Departure:

The Thiruvabharanam procession starts from the PandalamValiyakoickal temple. 

First Night Halt:

After passing through Kulanada, Ullannur, and Kuriyanappally,the procession 
stops forthe night at the Ayroor Puthiyakavu Devi temple. 

Second Night Halt:

The next day, the procession continues, stopping at LahaForest IB for the 
second night. 

Arrival at Sannidhanam:

The procession is scheduled to reach Saramkuthi at 5 pm onJanuary 14th and 
finally reach the Sannidhanam at 6 pm.
