I don't know what an “awareness worthy streaming service” is. :) But,
IMAP's not really in the current scope of Telepathy. It's got no concept
of presence, status, contact lists, instant messaging, ...
Some IM protocols do support notifications for unread mail, and most of
the relevant CMs do expose these now, thanks to Nicolas Dufresne.
