I checked for updates about an hour ago via device manager. It said no
updates available.

Gary Ray here...

I just checked and there are no updates for the N 86 at this time. The N 86
seems to be getting pretty old...grin...so no updates. Now, whether or not
the other phone in question is at the current level, I don't know. I am
inserting the directions I used to update before and to check this time.
The carrier is AT&T so some of the stuff may not be true for the phone in
question.

My experience is that there is no change to programs or things installed on
my N 86 when an update is installed.

Instructions:
To upgrade the firmware on your Nokia N86, please do the following:
Note: Please make sure your N86 has at least a 75% charge on the battery to
avoid any issues during the upgrade process. You may also connect your
device to an AC adapter during the upgrade process for redundancy.
1. Turn on your phone and then press * # 0 0 0 0 #. This key sequence will
display your current firmware.
2. Press the left-selection key to bring up the options menu and press
select on the first option, which should be: "Check for updates".
3. Confirm with the left-selection key when asked if you want to connect to
the internet.
4. Use your up/down arrow keys to select the internet connection type.
Note: In your situation, you want to connect to a connection called AT&T
Media Net.
You should next hear a message letting you know that the update process is
in progress. If there are any updates, A dialog will open displaying the
available updates.

If done over the air generally no but it is always advised to do back-up on
memory card.
