You or some other developer can find all third party modifications by
comparing standard and modified SquirrelMail scripts. Unix and Linux
system have utilities that can show all differences between two sets of
files.

SquirrelMail 1.4.2 is very old version. There are known security issues.

If I remember correctly, SquirrelMail had similar issue with downloaded
file names. Header decoding functions didn't decode some header encodings
(Q or B) correctly. SquirrelMail has unofficial test plugin which can be
used to locate buggy header decoding functions, but it was written for
SquirrelMail 1.4.5+
