Thanks for the offer, but I found the problem(s). I guess I just needed a day away from it to clear my head.
I did not have the "php-mysql" package installed. Even though MySQL support is supposedly built into the latest RedHat PHP package, it still needs this extra package....weird. After I fixed that I noticed that I could not connect to MySQL at an IP address - I have to supply the hostname. I haven't figured out why, but it works, so I'm not complaining. The problem didn't have anything to do with BayesSpam, as I thought, but the PEAR-DB error reporting isn't very verbose, so I didn't know where to start looking. It's up and running now and I'm training away....
