I'm not sure why sendmail would be the issue.  Its more likely the program
which handles IMAP (e.g., uw-imapd, courier) that is the issue.  In the
case of uw-imapd with the standard 'mailbox' set up, the imapd program
must read and parse the entire file which contains the messages to figure
out which are the last 15.  This takes time.  With a very large "mailbox"
you could see a time out error.
