because semicolons are not RFC.  that's microsoft imposing its will on the
Internet community.  there is a plugin called send-to-semicolon (er, i
forget if that's the right name) that fixes this.  be aware, though that
Marc actually just made a change today in the hook used by that plugin in
CVS... but he and I have talked about retaining the plugin's functionality
by either re-adding that functionality to the core or making sure the
plugin gets changed as needed...
