For the CREATE call, I'm doing it manually per the instructions here: http://wiki.apache.org/solr/SolrCloud
Here's the exact URL I'm using: http://asu-solr-cloud.elasticbeanstalk.com/admin/collections?action=CREATE&name=directory&numShards=2&replicationFactor=2&maxShardsPerNode=2 I'm testing out your patch now, and I'll let you know how it goes.
