thanks Shawn, I did try with specifying a fixed set of fl and with no score none gave any better performance.
We have a different VM with same index and Solr4.1 on Jboss 5.1 which does perfectly fine with all the queries. So this is confusing us a bit more. Have our VM expert to look now hopefully to find some solution.
