Good question. I checked the output sent to Jetty. In the case where it returns a blank page, nothing at all is sent to Jetty. This raised my suspicion that Solr never got a chance to process the query. Sure enough, it led me to the finding that Jetty by default cannot take more than 4 KB of header. After I increased that limit, everything works. Problem solved.
