true but that issue only moved the majority of the rest of the index (stored fields, term vectors, fieldinfos, etc) to codec. There is more work in progress/to be done before the format is really extensible, particularly the long TODO list at the end of https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LUCENE-2621 -- lucidimagination.com
