Phuah Yee Keat, thank you very much, it worked, although there is a
remaining problem discussed below which does not prevent it from working
now.
madbiologist, I very respectfully disagree that it is a new bug, it
seems to be a regression caused by this bug fix, because it did work
correctly some

Unfortunately the latest fix has broken vodafone-mobile-connect, which
now fails to run if the E620 is plugged in, just showing on the taskbar
for a few seconds and then exiting. With the E620 plugged in, network
manager can make a connection, but I really need vmc as it allows usage
monitoring, et
Additionally, I tried with either wicd or network manager installed,
that makes no difference to the problem with vmc. I prefer wicd, but for
testing in a basic configuration, network manager is probably best as it
is what most people use by default.

Got some information which may help to debug this. I ran vmc from the

WeatherGod,
Thanks for your quick response.
I am not using Compiz, and have now uninstalled it, and I can't yet tell
if it started after a particular update.
As I always use separate /home partitions for my data, it should be
fairly easy to start again with a fresh install, and add the few drive
Before doing that, I have just tried a desktop of roughly similar
configuration, but faster,, i.e. AMD64 dual core and Nvidia graphics,
also an up to date Ubuntu 9.10, and that has no virtual consoles either.
The monitors show no signal, but F7 gets back to the GUI.

Well, the laptop works with the Nvidia "173" driver as far as virtual
consoles are concerned. It may be possible to fix this for everyone who
may be affected by making the Hardware Drivers applet offer the 173
driver only, on this hardware configuration.
But give me 48 hours to check the desktops
I can confirm that E620 now works correctly, i.e I can go online and

I would suggest that the kernel is probably now fixed, but a number of
people are still having trouble with Network Manager.
My recommendation is to install wicd, which will uninstall NM, to see if
that fixes it. You can always reverse it later.
Also, use Vodafone Mobile Connect,

Further to that, could Vodafone Mobile Connect be added to the
repositories, and preferably the next CD image, as it is GPL? It would
make it easier for inexperienced users, and more convenient for
everyone.
