Before doing that, I have just tried a desktop of roughly similar configuration, but faster,, i.e. AMD64 dual core and Nvidia graphics, also an up to date Ubuntu 9.10, and that has no virtual consoles either. The monitors show no signal, but <CTRL><ALT>F7 gets back to the GUI.
