happended to me when another user was logged in, and when switching to
tty8 (the other user's session) the blinking stopped, so i switched over
each tty and also in tty7 the blinking stopped. it crashed about 20
seconds afterward, though :/

The fix described by eckerj on Bug #267241 seems to work for this bug as
well.
As described by eckerj, I added "radeon" to the end of /etc/modules.
Then removed 'Driver "vesa"' from /etc/X11/xorg.conf and rebooted. High
rez Gnome came right up.

This worked like a champ. Wish I'd thought of doing that. Added
"radeon" to /etc/modules, took the 'Driver "vesa"' out of
/etc/X11/xorg.conf, rebooted, and the high rez Gnome came right up.
This is on a Sony Vaio VGN-A270P with an ATI Mobility Radeon 970
On a Sony Vaio VGN A270P, there are only a few function keys activated
when you hold down the "Fn" key (such as screen brightness up and down).
The screen brightness keys seem to work. However, the CD/DVD eject
button does not work. This worked fine in Gutsy (7.10). It stopped
working in 8.04 an
I have tested this patch under Ubuntu 8.10 with avelsieve 1.9.7-2
installed and can confirm this fixes it for me.
I have also created a ticket in the avelsieve trac for this issue to try and
join all the dots on this one.
