I have a similar problem with a Samsung widescreen LCD. I also have an
Nvidia video driver - I think that is the common problem.
If I disable the restricted driver - a pain at 600x600, for sure - I
have to reboot, and then it tries to set up 1680x1050. It almost works

Digging through _all_ the xorg logs, I found one where it had tried to
start the nvidia-glx-new driver...
It failed because the nvidia-kernel module wasn't loaded.
I'm not sure who should have set that up when I enabled the driver,
and I don't know how to force it after I enable the driver and b

I now seem to be mostly upgraded, but I Just noticed that I have a mix
of 2.18 and 2.20 gnome packages: -core and -desktop environment seem to
be old. Is this a problem? If so, how can I recover?

Well, I had attached the tgz of the dir above, but oh, well...
BTW, I got on with it by copying home to an external HD, and doing a
clean install.
