Solved. The installer has a bug.
I have a separate boot partition which the installer did not mount or
perhaps unmounted (it is in /etc/fstab)
Anyway:
* The new kernel was installed in the mountpoint directory.
* The initrd image was missing from the grub menu.lst
* The hd(0,0) line was wrong

Well porting proprietary products to Linux would defeat the poi

This is running in VMware, and I get an error: "oprofile: P4 PMC not
available" on the console.
Maybe oprofile and VMware don't play together.

This is using the "install server" option. The box is in use now so I
cannot retry with a different installer, but I can provide hardware info
if you tell me which commands will give it to me.
