Resolved! I can't really imagine how but the list file of xserver-xorg-core was

Still no sound. In fact, with latest upgrades installed, I get no sound at
all, even with
"options snd-hda-intel model=test" in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. (With
this option, I was previously able to get sound from the with headphones
plugged into the mic jack.)

No, enable_msi=1 is not sufficient.
When you say "don't split module options across lines" do you mean it
should be multiple options on one line like this:
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 model=test
I tried "options snd-hda-intel model=test" but without "enable_msi=1"
and got the same result

So as to not potentially complicate this, I should tell you that I have
edited /etc/init/tty[2-6].conf on the advice of people in ubuntu IRC
support. I changed them all to be similar to tty1.conf, adding runlevels 4
and 5:
start on runlevel [2345]
stop on runlevel [!2345]
These edits made no diff
The last line in /etc/network/interfaces was the problem. I commented it out
and all tty's start.
I don't really remember where I got that line from, but I think in karmic I
was trying to set default sink for pulseaudio on boot.
