I first install Karmic base system to have a 2.6.31-*
kernel and then reboot to dist-upgrade to Lucid, then keeping booting
only on the remaining Karmic 2.6.31-* kernel.
Good luck helping with it for the huge amount of such widespread budget
hardware...

Today's new kernel 2.6.32-21... (combined with other essential updates)
allow Lucid to boot properly on the few Via K8M890 chipset in my
cybercafé.
"Just in time" would I say!
