Nothing better with Kernel 2.6.33 packaged for Ubuntu and available here

panics, completly freezing all the system without a chance to avoid hard
reboot.

Only until version 2.6.31 were kernels driving this hardware well so
that it seems to be a critical regression that should be seriously told
to kernel hackers if ever someone here could do so.
