Funnily, the same happened to me again. Without any manipulation of the machine at all. This time I was able to rmmod a couple of modules. I'd say the culprit is one of usbcore, appletouch, usbhid, ohci_hcd and ehic_hcd. After removing these modules and re-loading them, the touchpad worked again.
