This hasn't happened to me ever before I upgraded to Hardy. Since then, I got this problem a couple times.
The funny thing is, diagnosing the problem was next to impossible because also the keyboard started to behave strangely, taking very long to accept input (in the order of seconds) and repeating some keystrokes multiple times (in the order of tens). After a reboot both the touchpad and keyboard problems were gone so I doubt it's hardware related. I'd guess USB module or similar.
