Reinstalling mysql 5.0 has solved the problem. After that the mythtv
packets install behaved and I can log into mysql with user root and
without password. Just as a suggestion, maybe the password could be
prompted if the login to mysql doesn't work without a password.

I am once again open to the possibility that this may be temperature
related. Mea Culpa.
It's getting hot at work so I got a really small desk fan, and it is
pointing on to the machine and myself. While it is running, the machine
runs cool and I have had no lockups at all. A bit of experimentation

Another data point: It crashed with a YouTube clip running and the last

I get the exact same thing. Dell T7400, two Xeon quad core, two Nvidia
Quadro 1700 cards. The installation CD starts booting with the progress
bar and so on, but drops into a console when it tries to start X.
If I do "startx" manually, I get "Fatal server error: no screens found".
