Same bug here.
gvim also starts normally when started with sudo.
$ sudo gvim
I've created a temporary "fix" with the following command:
echo alias gvim=\'gvim -X\' >> .bashrc
This adds a line to the .bashrc which tells bash to start "gvim -X" when the
command "gvim" is given.

My system is Ubuntu 8.10 with kernel 2.6.27-7-generic. Since I installed Ubuntu
8.10 sound is not working. My Chipset is VIA 8237 and the correct module is
loaded (snd-via82xx). I even reinstalled the module and killed the pulseaudio
process.

When running kernel 2.6.27-9-generic, my PC crashes at (apparently) random
intervals.
The average interval is 1 hour.
The problem does not occur with linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic, so I am running
that now :-)
