Same bug here.
gvim also starts normally when started with sudo.

$ sudo gvim

I've created a temporary "fix" with the following command:
echo alias gvim=\'gvim -X\' >> .bashrc
This adds a line to the .bashrc which tells bash to start "gvim -X" when the 
command "gvim" is given.
