This fix didn't work for me, as I was unable to force the version of one
of the packages as the "Force" option in Synaptic was greyed out. My
oldest previous kernel was 2.6.24.13-16 - perhaps this fix works with
2.6.24.13-18 but I have no way of trying.

OK, woke up this morning, switched on my PC, and the problem is back.

This just happened to me again, only 2 minutes ago. I opened KMail, and
it downloaded 4 new messages via POP3. I right-mouse-clicked on the
Inbox, sleected "Mark All Messages As Read", andthen I got the crash and
I was logged out of my PC and back to the logon box.

The only way is to reproduce this bug is to keep rebooting the machine
until it happens - which is every 3rd or 4th reboot.

I don't believe this bug is invalid as I'm still getting exactly the same
problem on a fresh and updated install of Karmic 9.10 32bit. I've tried both
mplayer from the Ubuntu repos and also a more up-to-date version from a
3rd-party repo. Running mplayer in terminal still gives:

I can confirm this bug in Karmic (worked fine in Jaunty with same icon
set and GTK 2.0 theme)
What happens:
I get this problem in approximately 25% of cases. When I power on my
machine and the Desktop loads, it loads the GNOME icon set and GNOME GTK

@Sense - OK, I've run your fix and no longer suffer from bug 389766.
However, I am still getting this bug. Running gnome-settings-daemon in
terminal gives me:

OK, this is getting silly - I've had bug this happen 4 times so today
(so far).
I am getting this on all 3 of my machines - 2 NVidia-based desktop PCs
and also my Intel-based laptop (HP Compaq 6720s).
On 2 occasions I lost work when when this crash happened. This is
really not very good.
