I am using ubuntu-7.04 AMD64 and I see this behavior several times a
day. It happens when I close a window, but it does not matter whether I
use the close button on the window bar or close the application in some
other way. Once it happened when I closed a tab in firefox (not the
entire window).

I have exactly the same problem. It happens to me several times a day.
If I quickly press shift-alt-sysrq-k, I am logged out. I can then login
again and everything is fine, except that the files
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and /var/log/gdm/:0.log.1 are several hundred MB

I can confirm now that the crash happens not only when I close a window,
but also when I close a tab in Firefox. This has happened to me at least
twice. The system freezes (the mouse does move, but with delays) and the
log files start growing very quickly. shift-alt-sysrq-k immediately logs
me out
If I open an XLS file with a cell containing the word "Christoph" and
then close the file, oocalc crashes in the way described above. Any
change to the word "Christoph" prevents this from happening. I'm using
Gutsy Gibbon, ooffice 2.3.0. On Debian, ooo-build-2.0.4.9, this does not
happen.

Just installed Ubuntu 7.04 from scratch and the bug is still there! The
/etc/init.d/postfix script needs to be changed.

if start-stop-daemon --start --exec ${DAEMON} start -- quiet-quick-
start; then

This is strange, because the script installed with Ubuntu 7.04 calls
/usr/sbin/postfix with the wrong syntax.
The commands "start" and "stop" have to be used with /usr/sbin/postfix, but
they are not. Maybe the script

On my system, when the script is like yours, I get the following error

I get a similar error on AMD64, Ubuntu 7.04. However, it is not quite
the same, because the output I get also contains this line (repeated
here):

No, it is not different:
# /usr/sbin/postfix -- quiet-quick-start
postfix/postfix-script: fatal: usage: postfix start (or stop, reload, abort,
flush, check, set-permissions, upgrade-configuration)
Furthermore, this behavior seems correct to me. Please check "man
