I have exactly the same problem. It happens to me several times a day.
If I quickly press shift-alt-sysrq-k, I am logged out. I can then login
again and everything is fine, except that the files
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and /var/log/gdm/:0.log.1 are several hundred MB
long, filled with lines like this:

Freeing resource id=426011F7 which isn't there.

I've attached the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file (but of course one before a
crash, so it is not huge). I have an nvidia card (see the log file), so
it is not an ATI issue.

I'll be happy to provide any other information that may be needed to fix
this bug. Thanks!
