Problem solved! I simply updated the old Acer Aspire 5315 bios to V 1.45.
the fan is now working fine
I'd also like to thank everyone for all the valuable info... it really
helped a great deal

off. I tried Ubuntu 8.10 and observed the fan keeps working. I assume
then there is a bug in the latest kernels as everything also works f
