Thanks @John P. Resolution in the 20150422 build of Ubuntu MATE is
1024x768. I'd prefer that it be able to go full screen like with past
Ubuntu releases, and think that would be a true, final fix. That's the
question for the folks working on this - what's the intention?

Hey, @Dekker500's workaround did not yield a text input of the
passphrase as I expected, but it did cause the graphical text entry to
come up! What in the world?
adding GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text to /etc/default/grub and then "sudo
update-grub" causes the (plymouth?) graphical screen to come up a

Noticed that having a full disk encryption install with home directory
encryption requires entering the full disk encryption password twice:
once to unlock the disk, and again to unlock the 'swap'. Did not
configure a separate swap, this is the default swap provided.
