I have the same problem at 9.04 (kernel as from a brand new install) with an
old PIII-633, 256MB and a 4GB old WD ATA-33 HDD.
Solved the problem as described previously:
"I fixed the problem by turning my drives to cable select and re-plugging my
ide cables in the proper direction."
Same machine
Finally I was able to install 804.
It was a bank of memory.
I just tried to remove the 2nd GB and installed.
Tried to replace the 1st GB with the one taken out and crashed.
Funny thing is that a 10 hrs memtest 1.70 didn't find any problem in the memory.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: ogle
Have 7.10 installed with medium graphics effects and used Envy for my nvidia
card.
I watch a dvd without problems in a window.
If I switch fullscreen when I want to go back to a windowed view the system
tries to do it (I see the graphic movements)
I tried to switch off all fancy graphics (apperance-visual effects-none) and
keeping the same drivers.
Worked good.
Then I tried to switch on all fancy graphics (apperance-visual effects-extra)
and keeping the same drivers.
Had the same problem.
The only way to get out of it is to alt-tab to ogle
nd is recorded because of
low volume.
A friend of mine has the same problem with a 606 on a different hw.
Hope it helps.
Any expectation for a fix?
Thanks, Gherardo

All dmesg.*, all kern.log , all syslog.* have the 2.6.15 stamp.

I tried once again.
First tine kernel 2.6.24 gave:
init: caught segmentation fault, core dumped
I tried again removing quiet splash and the last thing before the segfault was:

As further input, as I boot using 2.6.15 it says:

Since looks like a long process to fix this bug... can I try to reinstall from

Or you'd need me to keep the pc like now for some time? How long?
