I have a work around for the problem. Once the OS is fully booted (I
listen for the entry sound); I close the cover and reopen it. The
screen returns to normal.
My power management settings for "On battery power" is to blank the
screen.

After executing the try Ubuntu-9.10 option from the LiveCD, I cannot
access a second or third SATA drive. Symptoms seem identical to those
described above. Functionality that worked correctly in 8.10 and 9.04
got broken in 9.10.

FYI The problem also occurs after installing karmic-desktop-i386
2009-10-26_1409.
I forgot to mention that the Removable Media menu entry disappears following
the upgrade from the initial install and all partitions are listed under places.

ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso to to create live USB with the console

Shades of VISTA! After executing the try Ubuntu-9.10 option from the
LiveCD, I cannot access a second or third SATA drive. This VISTA-like
quality could do a lot to alienate someone who tries to install 9.10 on
a second hard drive. Looks like I will have to hang onto 9.04 for a
while.

It asked if I wanted to send error report I said Yes
It wouldn't let me report it
So I tried to update again
It worked fine. I don't understand what is different this time.
