All right... so I broke and *did* install network-manager-gnome...
I set up a vpn through nm-applet -- now I know how to create one manually...
why is there no documentation? :-( --
When I click on the connection, I get something along the lines of "cannot
connect to VPN" without even being asked

I installed desktop effects and enabled the desktop cube.
This caused all of the icons in my system tray to appear in a single line and
'hidden' applications to appear, specifically adept updater when it has "no
updates available" status.

XWindows did not load. I checked the error log and saw that nv was the culprit
so I reverted to my original xorg.conf and was able to startx... to my dismay
