I didn't have any problems with Nouveau, I just wanted the better response I
get from the proprietary drivers. I found that Nvidia had an update: 302.07; I
manually installed it with worse results than I got from the
OMG! I just realized this as something I filed back in Feb! so sorry-I
no longer have virtualbox installed as I installed 12.04 LTS last week.

I just want to add that this only seems to affect 3D versions. could
this have anything to do with Compiz? I'm able to watch videos without
logouts using Gnome classic or Ubuntu 2D. I've tried this with Nvidi

Looks like we finally got a fix. I just installed Nvidia driver 302.17, watched
a 55 min. Hulu video using Unity 3d without crashing. Prior version 302.11
worked fine in 2d mode only, crashed to login in 3d. I also observed that temp
didn't rise while watching movie. Nvidia settings showed 60-61
Well, sadly it looks like I spoke too soon! Just experienced crash to
login about 10 mins into a flash video. Back to work, guys.

Daniel-looks like I have a hardware problem-maybe a loose microphone

Kudos to you-this worked for me.
I just installed the latest stable kernel: 2.6.35 using method described by
'Master Kernel Thread' No errors-everything seemed to work except VLC. After
reinstalling VLC I received 'status 5' message; bootup continuing after brief
pause.
