Just happened to me. Using Ubuntu 9.04 x86_64 and fully updated.
Restarting firefox fixes it.
Does not happen frequently.

I can confirm this bug. Seems to have something to do with Flash and
Composite.

These problems are very specific to ubuntu, as a similar setup (linux kernel,
gdm, gnome etc) forund on Fedora Core work perfectly on the new iMac.
I suggest someone install Fedora Core and use it for deubugging to catch the
symbols coming from gdm during the freeze point on ubuntu.

I think Ubuntu needs to provide the jack plugin as part of
libasound2-plugins as ALSA intended.
The jack related readme and example conf as in the package, but no
driver

Can reproduce this issue with Ubuntu 20.04 fully up to date as of
Oct-2021. Using a Brother HL-L2390DW in my case. This is a regression as
it used to work fine in Ubuntu 18.04.
