I also upgraded from Hardy to Heron with glipper crashing when adding it
to the panel. As other comments suggested I deleted ~/.glipper directory

I have the same issue. In my case the issue is that the likewise service
isn't starting on boot. If you drop to the a tty console (CTRL-ALT+F2)
for tty2 and sign on with your local account and start the service:
(username@hostname:~$ sudo service likewise start) and enter your local
username's pass
